Who is Shortlist for?

Singles who know what they want. They’re intentional, app-fatigued, and serious about quality over quantity.

Our initial focus is people in their mid-20s to late 40s, as that’s where our pool is currently strongest. However, Shortlist is open to everyone, and we’re expanding into wider age groups as we grow. If we can match you, we will!

If you’re just here to “see what’s out there,” we’re not for you. If you’re seeking substance, you’re in the right place.

Can anyone join?

Not automatically. Every application is personally reviewed, and we only accept people we believe we can genuinely set up.

Where does Shortlist operate?

We’re based in New Zealand, focused on the major regions and any areas where our list is present.

Are all identities welcome?

Of course. Matching is based on fit and who’s on the list at any time. What matters most is that you’re respectful, and seeking a genuine relationship.

Why blind dates?

Because chemistry isn’t found in your best photo. Blind dates bring back curiosity and connection. We match on lifestyle, values, energy, and vibe, not likes or swipes.

Is it private?

100%. Privacy is our priority. No public profiles, no searchable database. Your details stay with us — and only the essentials are shared with a potential match, with your consent.

Will I see photos first?

No — and that’s the point. This is about compatibility and alignment first. Instead, you’ll get a thoughtful intro and have a phone call to sense the vibe before meeting.

How much does Shortlist cost?

Shortlist is designed to be accessible, intentional and curated.

Each Shortlist package is personalised from the first hello, with post-date feedback used to sharpen future introductions.

Our fee promise means that if we haven't made an introduction within 12 months, we'll return half of your package fee. Any remaining introductions in your package don't expire — we'll keep working to find you a match — though we can't guarantee a specific timeframe.

What if you can’t match me?

Chemistry can't be forced and real connection takes time — but if we haven't made an introduction for you within a year, we'll return half your package fee. Any introductions you haven't used yet stay open with no expiry, and we'll keep working on finding you a match — we just can't promise exactly when.

Can I turn down a match?

Of course. It’s always your call. We just encourage keeping an open mind — some of the best connections are unexpected (we’ve made the match for a reason).

What if I need to pause?

Life happens. You can pause for up to 6 months.

Any tips for intentional dating?

• Focus on one person at a time.

• Have a phone call first – vibe matters early.

• On the fence? Go anyway. The best dates often happen when you least expect them.

How do you verify who I'm matched with?

Everyone on Shortlist goes through a personal call with our team, where we also confirm ID — so you can trust that who you're introduced to is genuinely who they say they are.

What counts as an introduction?

An introduction happens once both people have agreed to connect and had their phone call. If you decide not to go ahead before that point, it doesn't use up one of your introductions.

What's shared about me before a match?

Just the essentials — first name, age, general area, and a warm summary of who you are (the bio you have approved). We never share your last name, photos, or workplace details before you've met.

Is my first call with Shortlist free?

Yes — your discovery call is free and no-obligation. It's a chance for us to get to know you and confirm we can genuinely help before you commit to a package.

How many people are in the Shortlist pool?

We've now reviewed 475 applications, with an average applicant age of 38, based mostly across Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. Every application is personally assessed — we're not trying to fill a database, we're trying to make real matches.

What are people actually looking for?

Across the board, honesty and emotional intelligence come out on top — the two are neck and neck overall, with honesty still #1 for men specifically. Dating app fatigue is now the single most-mentioned frustration in our applications (28.9%), ahead of low effort or mixed signals — which tells you most people coming to us have already tried the alternative and found it wanting.
